Red poppies bring bright touches of colour to the greens of this Irish landscape, with a couple walking through the meadow. I painted this acrylic some years ago, enjoying the contrast between those complementary reds and greens.
At the time, I was practising painting “skyholes”: adding small patches of sky colour into solid areas of foliage to suggest the gaps between leaves and branches. It helps break up the trees and gives them a more natural structure.
The couple do an important job too. Cover them with your thumb and it becomes much harder to judge the size of the trees and the landscape around them!
