I came across this scene in an old black-and-white photograph and decided to make a warm, colourful watercolour of it. The little bar, the bicycle outside and the two men at the counter suggested a story to me.
I imagined they had met by chance on the road while going about their business and decided there was time for a quick pint of stout. Perhaps a couple of the advertised Wills Gold Flake cigarettes too! That imagined detour gave the painting its title, A Sneaky Pint.
The photograph supplied the scene, but I enjoyed giving it that little piece of everyday life: two men putting their errands aside for a while and stopping for a chat.
