Chez Max’s red awning shelters diners in this acrylic painting on canvas, looking from Palace Street towards Dame Street and the Olympia Theatre. The little French restaurant sits tucked into its corner beside Dublin Castle, with warm windows lighting the tables outside.

I took my reference photograph through the castle railings to bring the Olympia into the composition as well. I’ve been there for music and theatre many times, and had passed this picturesque scene often before eventually painting it. Including both places brings together the meal and the evening’s entertainment in one view.
