This is an early acrylic from a time when I often used a mauve ground beneath my paintings. It shows a couple looking at the artwork in the Apollo Gallery, which used to occupy this corner of Dawson Street.
There were two floors of paintings to admire. Although I never exhibited there myself, I always stopped to look at the work in the windows, so it was a familiar subject for me.
I included Duke Street to the right to give the composition more interest and depth, taking the view beyond the gallery and into the surrounding streets.
