Red poppies fill the foreground of this early acrylic painting on board, their slender stems rising through the meadow grasses. Beyond them, softer colours lead towards a distant treeline beneath a pale blue sky.

I love painting poppies and placing them in different landscape settings. This was part of a series exploring that arrangement of flowers close up, an open middle ground and trees beyond. I experimented with different red pigments, trying to capture the elusive, paper-like quality of those wonderful petals.
