Kylemore Abbey sits within a frame of branches and vegetation in this acrylic painting of Connemara, County Galway. The lake is as still as glass, reflecting the pale stonework beneath a rich mixture of greens and warm reds in the foliage.
I often stayed in Connemara on family trips and took hundreds of photographs for painting reference. On one visit, I spotted this gap in the foliage, which framed the Abbey perfectly. I returned to the photograph later to paint the scene, keeping that natural frame around the building and its reflection.
