I used more muted, earthy colours for this acrylic than I usually do in my forest and bluebell paintings. Painted on an 18 × 14 inch canvas, it gave me a chance to explore a slightly different palette.

The path feels less trodden as the couple walk towards the edge of the forest, silhouetted against the brightness beyond. Their orange umbrella adds a touch of warmth among the quieter colours.

I love playing with dappled light, shaping the patches of light and dark to draw the viewer’s gaze through the painting. My inspiration for these woodland scenes comes from visits to Donadea Forest Park and Moore Abbey Wood in Monasterevin, both in County Kildare.
