A couple take refuge beneath their umbrella in this romantic watercolour painting, huddled together on a city park bench despite the cold. Snow covers the ground around them, and bare trees disappear into the wintry sky. Maybe there’s a pocket flask full of brandy that we can’t see!
This was part of a little series I painted of couples sitting on benches. While working on the sky, I used a fine water spray without realising there was some washing-up liquid left in the bottle. It created a strange effect on the paper, but I managed to work it into something resembling snowflakes. An unexpected bit of winter weather saved the painting!
