A tiny photograph of this café in a magazine was the starting point for this acrylic painting. I was instantly drawn to the way the light caught the umbrellas and awning, making them stand out against the shaded parts of the building.
The shadows in the photograph were quite dark, so I played around with the balance of light and shade. I settled on a deep, cool purple for the shadows, keeping them dark enough to make the sunshine glow while still allowing you to see into them.
