Café en Seine, Dawson Street, Dublin – 64

I painted this view of Café en Seine from across Dawson Street, drawn to the red-and-white candy-striped awnings it had at the time. They created a lovely pattern above the ground-floor windows, with glowing yellows, oranges and reds spilling on to them from the upper windows.

In this acrylic painting, I silhouetted the passers-by against the windows and exaggerated the blues and mauves across the wet pavement to strengthen the contrast. It is a cold, rainy scene, but with all that warmth coming from inside, I don’t think it feels quite so cold!
