This is an early watercolour from a time when I exhibited in a gallery in Blackrock, not far from Seapoint. Three youngsters explore the water’s edge, looking for crabs and seashells.

I liked the simplicity of the view and tried to include only what was needed to describe it. The underdrawing was in pen and ink, with watercolour bringing in the sky, blue water and the light of the scene.

I wanted to keep it free of too much fussiness, letting the figures and their small seaside discoveries hold our attention.
