The idea for this acrylic painting came from the photograph Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville by Robert Doisneau. I liked the idea of a couple caught in a kissing embrace while the rest of the world carries on around them.
I chose Dublin’s Ha’penny Bridge as the setting, with its familiar arch and the warm windows of the Winding Stair beyond. It seemed a fitting place for that little pause in the bustle. You often see visitors stopping for a selfie here while everyone else hurries across on their way somewhere.
It is a romantic theme I have returned to in a few other paintings: two people absorbed in each other, with the city carrying on around them.
