An old black-and-white photograph was the starting point for this watercolour of three men taking a break from repairing a stone wall in Connemara. I wanted to capture something of rural Ireland in a time gone by, with the men and their work belonging naturally to the landscape around them.
Working from a photograph without colour gave me the freedom to invent my own palette. I chose muted, earthy colours that I felt suited the mood and the rough character of the west of Ireland.
I painted it on rough Arches watercolour paper. Its texture worked particularly well for the stonework and uneven ground, becoming part of how I described the scene.
