I find watercolour a lovely medium for an autumn scene like this one in St Stephen’s Green. Washes of earthy browns and oranges helped me describe the foliage as it thins and the trees begin to lose their leaves.
The couple sit in the middle distance, with a few pigeons nearby. Those small touches of life give the eye somewhere to pause among the trees and autumn colour.
I wanted to keep the painting quiet and simple, letting the washes suggest the changing season without describing every leaf.
