Clery’s stretches along the right of this rainy O’Connell Street scene, its warm windows lighting the pavement as people pass beneath umbrellas. The view takes in the familiar clock, the long frontage and the street beyond.
I combined two painting views to create this wider composition, giving the building more of its surroundings. For me, Clery’s is the “grand old lady” of O’Connell Street, and there’s a poignancy in remembering its department-store days. I like to think a painting can hold on to something of a place and a moment in its history.
