A watercolour seascape painting of the James Joyce Martello Tower at Sandycove, Co. Dublin.
This Martello Tower built in the early 19th century is part of a defensive network of towers that were constructed in anticipation of an invasion by French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
The tower now houses the James Joyce museum, a museum dedicated to the life and works of the great writer and is the setting for the opening of Joyce's literature masterpiece 'Ulysses' .
It is attributed to James Joyce for a number of reasons. The tower was rented by Joyce’s college friend Oliver Gogarty (Buck in Ulysses) Oliver rented it with the desire to turn it into a temple for the worship of the Greek Gods.
James Joyce stayed in the tower for six days leaving early according to Gogarty due to an incident involving a gun. The story of Joyce’s Ulysses starts the night after the gun incident.
The tower is open every day of the year.
