The English Market was developed and still owned by Cork City Council, and is one of the oldest municipal markets of it’s kind in the world. It houses a variety of foodstuffs with an emphasis on organic products by small-scale producers, it has become a hugely popular place to shop by locals and people from afar.

It was visited by the Queen of England on her recent trip to Ireland. The painting features the Victorian fountain found in the Prince's street end of the market.
