Sunflowers stretch towards a villa in this acrylic painting of Tuscany, their golden heads standing out against deep green leaves and a clear blue sky. I chose a portrait format to give the flowers plenty of space in the foreground, drawing the eye upwards through the field to the house.
My first encounter with an Italian sunflower field was from a train passing through the Italian countryside and was rather disappointing! It was August, and all the flower heads had already died off. It would be another year or two before I finally saw them in their golden splendour — the sight I had been hoping for.
