The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare have to be seen to be believed, especially when the weather gives you a clear view along them. In this acrylic painting, the successive cliff faces lead the eye towards O’Brien’s Tower in the distance.
Their sheer scale is difficult to capture on canvas. I placed a couple sitting in the foreground, absorbed in the view, to give the eye something familiar to measure the landscape against. A few distant herring gulls help suggest the enormous space around the cliffs too.
Strong greens and blues dominate, with yellow grasses bringing a little warmth to the foreground. I wanted to capture both the grandeur of the setting and the quiet pleasure of sitting together to take it all in.
