This acrylic was one of two paintings of Ashford Castle commissioned for an American wedding. The bride and groom wanted to give them as gifts to their respective parents, which made them lovely pieces to work on.
I explored the grounds looking for the best views before settling on this composition. There was a great deal of detail to capture, and I can still remember how time-consuming it was to paint all that stonework and those windows!
I used the clouds and softer distance to give some depth behind the castle. The clients had asked for no people in the painting, so I couldn’t use figures to suggest its impressive scale. Instead, the building itself takes centre stage.
