Strolling on Grafton Street – 501

People fill Grafton Street in this oil painting of Dublin’s shopping district, passing the bright windows and red awnings of Brown Thomas. The wet pavement carries their reflections into the foreground.

For this painting, I wanted to simplify the figures and faces, suggesting the people through their shapes, clothing and movement. I also pushed the contrast between warm and cool colours: the oranges and yellows of the shops stand out against the blue street and sky, giving the scene its energy.
