Four men sit together with their shopping bags in this watercolour painting, caught in the middle of a conversation. Their hats, jackets and individual expressions give each figure a character of his own.
The idea came from a photograph in a book about the west of Ireland. Looking at their body language, I imagined a chance meeting while out getting groceries: the man on the far right telling a story about someone newly arrived in the village, the two in the middle engrossed, and the man on the far left sitting upright, rather less convinced by what he was hearing!
