I photographed this view during a weekend in Paris, knowing I wanted to paint it. It was daytime when I visited, and I loved being able to look over the Montmartre rooftops towards the rest of the city spread out in the distance.

Later, I decided to turn the scene into evening and add a couple embracing as the focal point. Those changes gave this acrylic painting the romantic atmosphere I was looking for.

The original was a large 40 × 30 inch canvas, and I spent plenty of time on the cobblestones. I tried to bring them to life with blue reflections, contrasting with the warm colours of the house, café and red umbrella.
