A barge and a gathering of swans share the foreground of this acrylic painting of the Lower Deck pub beside the Grand Canal in Portobello, Dublin. Across the water, people sit and chat outside as light from the windows catches the canal’s surface.

I was lucky to find both the barge and the swans there when I took my reference photograph. It was quiet that day, so I added the people to recreate the bustle of a usual summer evening. The area has changed considerably since, giving this view an added sense of a particular time and place.
