Boats moored in Dun Laoghaire harbour were the subject of this watercolour painting, with the waterfront buildings and distant church spire providing a backdrop. There is always something around this harbour to keep me busy with a brush.
For several watercolours around this time, I experimented with dabbing small touches of pigment onto the paper, sometimes building them up in layers. Viewed from a little distance, the individual marks begin to come together and magically abstract becomes impressionist! The rough texture of the Arches watercolour paper helped the effect along and was very much part of the finished painting.
