People stroll along Castlemarket in this daytime watercolour painting of Dublin, with striped awnings shading the shopfronts and the Powerscourt Townhouse beyond. Dark shadows contrast with areas of untouched white paper to suggest the brightness of the afternoon sun.
Daylight was the setting for most of my city street paintings at this stage. I enjoyed working with those contrasts in watercolour, but felt I couldn’t quite reach the vibrancy I was chasing until I began using acrylics. That change also led me towards painting later in the day, when lit shop windows could bring another source of colour and warmth into the scene.
