Arnotts and Henry Street, Dublin – 392

This acrylic painting shows Henry Street around Christmas, with the candy-striped stalls of the December traders just visible among the crowds. I wanted to capture that familiar bustle as people gather gifts for under the tree, pick up tinsel and decorations, or perhaps dip into Arnotts for some expensive perfume.

I kept much of the colour muted to suggest the damp atmosphere of a Dublin December. There is plenty happening in the street, but I wanted the weather and the subdued light to be part of the scene too.

It is another view of a street I have returned to often in my paintings, this time with all the anticipation and activity of Christmas shopping.
