I painted Apollo House after bumping into an old friend who was involved with the Home Sweet Home campaign. In December 2016, the group occupied the vacant Dublin office building to provide shelter for homeless people and draw attention to the housing crisis. The occupation lasted until January 2017.
When I asked if I could help, my friend suggested painting the building and donating the work to the cause. So that is what I did. My friend gave this acrylic painting to the committee, although I never found out where it eventually ended up. The occupation ended not long afterwards. In the painting I exaggerated the warmth and brightness of all the windows in this old building, I guess to make it stand out and seem like a beacon of hope .....for the future.
I knew Apollo House well from my own days working in the Department of Social Welfare. It was one of several tall office buildings used by the department within a stone’s throw of each other, so painting it brought back memories of that earlier part of my life too.
