Alexandra Bridge, Clane, Co Kildare – 73

This watercolour of Alexandra Bridge, just outside Clane in County Kildare, was part of a commission for the Health Board. Two youngsters stand on the riverbank, waiting expectantly for a fish to bite.

I created a sweep of rushes and used the leaning tree to guide the eye towards the young anglers first, then onwards to the bridge. Those shapes helped bring the figures and the wider landscape together.

The subject brought back memories of my own youthful fishing expeditions: the quiet waiting, watching the water and the sudden thrill of a catch. I wanted to capture some of that simple pleasure in a day spent beside the river.
